Background of the Study
Advancements in technology, particularly voice recognition systems, are reshaping how language is produced and perceived. In Nigeria, the adoption of voice recognition technology in various applications—from smartphones to virtual assistants—has influenced phonetic articulation. This study investigates how the integration of such technology affects Nigerian phonetics, focusing on changes in pronunciation, enunciation, and accent adaptation. Users interacting with voice recognition systems may unconsciously alter their speech patterns to improve system accuracy (Okoro, 2023). By collecting voice samples from diverse Nigerian speakers using these systems, the research will conduct acoustic analyses to document any shifts in phonetic features. The study examines whether technology promotes a convergence toward a standardized pronunciation or if it reinforces existing regional accents. Such findings are critical for developers and linguists alike, as they provide insights into the feedback loop between user speech and machine processing (Adeleke, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread implementation of voice recognition systems in Nigeria, there is limited research on their impact on users’ phonetic articulation. Most studies have focused on technical performance rather than on how these systems influence natural speech patterns (Okoro, 2023). This gap hinders our understanding of potential changes in pronunciation or accent adaptation induced by technology. Without systematic phonetic analysis, it is challenging to determine whether voice recognition fosters a standardized speech pattern or exacerbates regional differences. This study aims to address these gaps by analyzing voice recordings from Nigerian users and evaluating the effects on phonetic articulation (Adeleke, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze phonetic changes in Nigerian speech when using voice recognition systems.
  • To evaluate the influence of technology on accent and pronunciation.
  • To assess implications for speech recognition accuracy and language evolution.

Research Questions

  • How does voice recognition technology affect Nigerian phonetic articulation?
  • What changes in pronunciation occur with regular use?
  • What are the implications for regional accent maintenance?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the intersection of technology and phonetic articulation in Nigeria, offering valuable insights for both language researchers and technology developers. The findings will help improve voice recognition systems and inform language education and preservation efforts (Okoro, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of voice recordings from Nigerian users interacting with voice recognition systems.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonetic Articulation: The production of speech sounds.
  • Voice Recognition Systems: Technology that converts spoken language into text.
  • Accent Adaptation: Changes in pronunciation patterns over time.
